Adult Foster Care
Adult Foster Care (AFC) offers Massachusetts residents who are eligible for MassHealth and meet the state’s eligibility criteria for this service an opportunity for a family-centered living experience. Participants are aging and/or have a disability (must be 16 years or older) and require additional assistance regarding their activities of daily living.
AFC offers participants an opportunity to continue to live with their families and/or to live with an approved caregiver providing an environment for full inclusion in the family and the community at large. The Arc has extensive experience in supporting people who participate in AFC with their family of origin. The goal is to help each participant to receive the assistance they need with activities of daily living so they can remain as independent as possible.
AFC caregivers need to have compassion for others and are willing to open their homes and lives to a person who needs daily assistance. They are responsible for insuring a participant’s Human Rights, safe guarding their well being, providing daily assistance with skills, assisting as needed with medical and other appointments, providing support to insure community access, participating in activities, and developing positive relationships. A caregiver must complete The Arc’s contractor process including but not limited to background checks and training requirements – homes must be in good repair and pass a standard inspection. The participant must have their own bedroom with access to other common areas of the home.
The program provides access to 24/7 on call emergency staffing;monthly case manager visits; monthly wellness checks by a registered nurse; emergency and non-emergency respite care; CPR/First Aid training; and caregiver training and ongoing support.
